A school bus overturned on Old Salem Road in Conyers, Georgia, late on Friday night, prompting a hospital emergency standby and closing State Route 138 near Interstate 20.
The crash happened in Rockdale County after several local high-school football games had finished. Emergency crews found the bus lying on its side in the road, with the front of the vehicle badly damaged and part of the roof collapsed.
Responders later righted the bus, which had come to rest against a construction barrier in a ditch. A large police and emergency-services presence remained at the scene as officers secured the area.
An Atlanta children’s hospital was placed on alert for a potential mass-casualty incident. However, authorities had not confirmed how many people were aboard the bus or whether anyone had been injured.
Officials had also not said which school operated the bus, where it had started its journey or where it was heading. Investigators had yet to establish what caused the vehicle to overturn or whether another vehicle was involved.
Georgia State Route 138 was closed from the Interstate 20 exit, leaving motorists unable to pass through the Salem Road junction. Drivers in the Conyers area were advised to avoid the route and use alternative roads.
Several other school buses were seen gathered in a nearby commercial car park, which appeared to be used as a staging area and possible reunification point for students and families.
The crash occurred on October 23, 2026. Further details about any casualties and the circumstances of the incident were not immediately released.
