Erling Haaland’s first-half header gave Manchester City a 1-0 victory over Coventry City and sent them to the top of the Premier League table.
City made it three wins from three on Saturday, September 5, with Haaland striking in the 26th minute at the Etihad Stadium. The Norway international met Antoine Semenyo’s cross with a powerful header that proved decisive.
Coventry threatened early, with Taiwo Awoniyi narrowly missing after a defensive mistake, but City gradually took control. Haaland went close to adding a second before half-time, while Rayan Cherki saw a fierce effort rebound off the post.
The visitors continued to pose a threat after the interval, forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into important saves. The goalkeeper denied Loum Tchaouna and later produced a point-blank stop to keep out Ellis Simms as Coventry searched for an equaliser.
Phil Foden also saw an effort cleared off the line, while Haaland had another goal ruled out for offside. City ultimately held on to secure a hard-fought win and maintain their perfect start to the league campaign.
The match also marked the Manchester City debuts of Enzo Fernández and Iliman Ndiaye. Fernández was drafted into the starting line-up shortly before kick-off after Nico O’Reilly withdrew during the warm-up, and he helped create the opening goal with a precise pass to Semenyo.
City are the only side with three victories from the opening three Premier League fixtures and finished the weekend three points clear at the summit. Their next match is away to Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday, September 8, before a Manchester derby against United on September 13.
