Pauline Hanson has come under fire from Labor over comments about Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s late mother and her long-term residence in public housing.
The One Nation leader made the remarks during a podcast with Karl Stefanovic in February, criticising Mr Albanese for referring to his childhood in a Housing Commission property with his mother, Maryanne Albanese.
Hanson described the Prime Minister as “pathetic” for discussing his upbringing.
“Oh, I’ve actually grew up in a Housing Commission house. You have no idea how hard it is to grow up in a Housing Commission house. Oh, my God. Don’t talk about a Prime Minister,” she said.
When Stefanovic responded that growing up in public housing would not have been easy, Hanson referred to Mr Albanese’s mother, who is now deceased.
“He said his mother lived in the same one. She was born in for 65 years. Sorry, that’s not on to me. It should be a limited time,” Hanson said.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen condemned the remarks, saying: “Attacking a woman who has been dead for more than 20 years for living in public housing is off-limits.”
The controversy follows separate criticism of Hanson by Liberal MP Andrew Hastie over cartoons. Hanson offered no comment when approached on Saturday.
