Jennifer Lawrence has joined Instagram for the first time, but has warned followers she will delete the account immediately if they post anything negative.
The Oscar-winning actress launched the verified profile under the handle @jlaw on Wednesday, September 9, and had attracted more than 2.6 million followers by Thursday.
In her first video post, the Hunger Games star said she was willing to “give it a shot” but would not tolerate hostile comments.
“If anyone says anything negative I will quit immediately, no questions asked,” Lawrence said. “If anyone thinks something mean, I will know and I will quit.”
She reinforced the warning in an Instagram Story, writing: “Please be mindful that any mean or aggressive comments can negatively affect the baby. It’s me. I’m the baby.”
Lawrence, 36, joked about her choice of username in her profile biography, which reads: “jenniferlawrence was taken.” She currently follows 46 accounts, including Miss Piggy, Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Josh Hutcherson and members of the Kardashian-Jenner family.
The actress had previously avoided having a public social-media presence, despite remaining one of Hollywood’s best-known stars. In a 2018 interview with InStyle, she said she used a private account to observe what was happening online but did not post herself.
“I’m on it, but I’m a voyeur. I watch, I don’t speak,” Lawrence said at the time, explaining that she did not want to expose herself to the backlash and opinions that often accompanied social media.
Her arrival was welcomed by fellow celebrities, with former Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause urging followers to behave and Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp describing it as “the best day of my life”.
Lawrence’s first post comes after more than a decade of keeping her online presence largely private, leaving the future of her new Instagram account dependent on whether followers heed her unusually firm opening condition.
