Kristi Noem has been accused of creating a fake press release on fabricated State Department letterhead after leaving her role as special envoy, following her dismissal as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
The statement, posted after the State Department announced her departure, said the position of Special Envoy to the Shield of the Americas had always been a six-month appointment.
It added: “The Special Envoy to the Shield of the Americas role was always a six-month appointment. Secretary Noem remains at the State Department as a Senior Advisor.”
However, people familiar with the situation said the statement was not an official State Department release and that the letterhead had been fabricated. One person said Noem had “gone rogue” by creating the letterhead and posting the statement on X.
A State Department official also confirmed that the statement, shared on both Noem’s official envoy account and her personal X account, had not been issued by the department.
The department and Noem have been approached for comment, but no response had been received.
