Six people, including two teenagers, were shot and one woman was killed in separate incidents across Chicago between Saturday evening and the early hours of Sunday, according to preliminary Chicago Police Department reports.
The victims were aged between 15 and 42. Police said four people were wounded and two were killed in separate incidents between Friday night and Saturday morning, bringing the provisional total for the long Labor Day weekend to 10 people shot, three homicides and one stabbing.
Additional police officers and violence interrupters were deployed across the city during the holiday weekend as part of efforts to prevent further shootings, CBS Chicago reported.
Chicago shootings leave woman dead and five injured
The fatal incident was reported shortly after midnight on the Near West Side. Officers responding to a property in the 2100 block of West Jackson Boulevard found a 42-year-old woman unresponsive inside a home with multiple gunshot wounds.
She was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police have not disclosed details about a possible suspect or motive.
In Gage Park, a 31-year-old man was shot as he got out of his car in the 3500 block of West 59th Street at about 1.12am. A dark-coloured SUV drove past and someone inside opened fire, striking him in the left leg and right ankle.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to Christ Hospital, where his condition was described as fair.
A 21-year-old man was also wounded in the Back of the Yards area at about 11.41pm. He was driving in the 1600 block of West 43rd Street when he heard gunfire and felt pain. Police said he had been shot in the face.
Paramedics treated him before he was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
In nearby Little Italy, a 42-year-old man was shot twice in the lower abdomen during an argument inside a home in the 1300 block of South Throop Street.
Police said the victim was involved in a verbal dispute with a man known to him, who allegedly produced a gun and fired several times. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
A person of interest was in custody and charges were pending. Officers recovered a gun at the scene.
Two teenagers were among those injured in separate shootings earlier in the evening.
A 16-year-old boy was walking in the 6400 block of South Claremont Avenue in Chicago Lawn at about 11.09pm when a dark-coloured SUV passed and someone inside fired at him. He was struck in the left leg and taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition.
At about 8.07pm, a 15-year-old boy was shot twice in the 6800 block of South Dorchester Avenue in Grand Crossing. He suffered wounds to the leg and buttocks and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was initially listed in good condition.
Investigations into the shootings were continuing, with police appealing for information about the incidents in which no arrests had been reported.
