A 17-year-old boy has died after being shot at a neighbourhood park in south-west Phoenix, police said, as detectives investigate the overnight attack near 83rd Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.
Officers were called to the area shortly after midnight on Tuesday, 8 September, following reports of gunfire. They found the teenager unresponsive with a gunshot wound before he was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Residents living close to the park told local media they heard a series of shots. One neighbour said there was a brief pause before more gunfire, while another reported seeing a body beneath an awning and called 911.
Surveillance footage provided by a resident appears to show a car arriving near the park around the time of the shooting. Several people were seen getting out and walking towards the area before the vehicle drove away, although police have not confirmed whether those individuals or the car were connected to the killing.
The shooting has left people in the neighbourhood concerned about their safety. “It’s dangerous,” one resident said, while another described feeling uneasy that someone capable of carrying out the attack could be nearby.
Police appeal for information
Phoenix police said the investigation remains active and urged anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about what happened to come forward.
