A 23-year-old man says another driver opened fire on his truck after a roadside confrontation in Wesley Chapel, Florida, leaving the vehicle with seven bullet holes but no one injured.
Wesley Coons had been driving east along County Road 56 near Meadow Pointe Boulevard early on Friday morning after dropping friends home from a Luke Bryan concert at the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheater.
He told local television station FOX 13 that he noticed a sedan partly in the cycle lane and lowered his window to check on the driver. Coons said the motorist appeared to take offence before directing a green laser at him and then pointing a gun.
Coons said he attempted to escape by making a U-turn, at which point the other driver allegedly began firing.
“I’m ducking and it was loud,” he said. “My ears were ringing and all I could hear was rounds hitting my truck.”
Police find nine shell casings
After the shooting, Coons said he found a Pasco County deputy nearby and reported what had happened. Deputies later recovered nine shell casings at the scene.
He said the gunfire left seven holes in his truck, including one in the front wing and another round which passed through the vehicle before becoming lodged in a headlight.
No injuries were reported, and the other driver had not been arrested as of the latest update.
The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office has not confirmed whether the incident is being investigated as a road-rage attack.
Coons said he remained grateful to be alive but was struggling to sleep and did not feel comfortable returning to the junction.
The sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation and has appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
