A 64-year-old woman has died after being gored by a bull during a running-of-the-bulls festival in Ayna, in Spain’s Albacete province.
The woman was outside the protective barriers along the route when the animal turned and charged at her during the first run of the town’s patron saint celebrations on Saturday, September 5.
Emergency services were alerted at 10.55am and a medical helicopter was dispatched. Despite receiving urgent treatment at the scene, she died from her injuries while being taken to the landing site.
Ayna mayor Juan Ángel Martínez said the woman had been standing near the barrier in an area known as Las Cuevas when the bulls began running. She was from Catalonia and had been visiting relatives in the Sierra del Segura area.
Another man, aged about 60, was injured in the arm by a different bull at another point along the route. His condition was not immediately reported to be serious.
The Ayna town hall suspended the remaining events planned for Saturday as a mark of respect. The celebrations in honour of Nuestra Señora Santa María de lo Alto had been due to continue until Tuesday, September 8.
