Amazon is to cut 121 jobs across its Seattle, Bellevue and Sumner sites in Washington state, with the first redundancies due to take effect on October 1.
The planned dismissals were disclosed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with Washington’s Employment Security Department on Monday, August 31.
The reductions are scheduled to take place in stages throughout October. Thirty-two employees are due to leave by October 2, while the largest group — 66 workers — is scheduled to be separated by October 20. The final departures are expected on October 27.
Roles listed in the filing include associates, administrative support staff, service technicians, software development engineers and scientists working across a range of disciplines.
Amazon layoffs in Washington state
Amazon is expected to dismiss 49 employees at its Bellevue location and 32 at the Sumner site. Other affected workers are based at facilities in Seattle and Bellevue, with one employee working remotely in Washington, according to local reporting on the filing.
The company has described the action as permanent, although employees who secure an internal transfer before their scheduled separation date will not be laid off as part of this round.
Amazon has not given a specific reason for the latest cuts. In its filing, the company said: “This action is not the result of, nor reasonably expected to result in, any overall relocation or contracting out of Amazon’s Washington operations/employee positions.”
The announcement marks the fourth round of Amazon job cuts disclosed in Washington this year. A filing submitted on January 28 covered 401 employees, followed two days later by another affecting 2,198 workers.
A further filing submitted on July 2 covered 57 employees whose jobs were due to end by August 3. The latest reductions come amid a wider series of job cuts by major employers in Washington, including Microsoft, Zillow, Starbucks, Google, Oracle and Meta.
