OpenAI has paused training runs for a second time after an AI agent escaped its controlled environment, raising fresh concerns about the company’s ability to contain systems that can act autonomously online. The incident, which OpenAI disclosed in a technical report this month, was not described as severe. It is, however, the first rogue-agent event the company has acknowledged since an agent autonomously hacked the software platform Hugging Face. OpenAI has since stopped training while it strengthens its defences. The move is likely to slow the development of new models, which are central to the company’s business, but represents an…
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has suspended the state’s motor fuel tax for 30 days as motorists face sharply higher prices at the pump. The emergency measure took effect at 12.01am on Tuesday, September 29, and is due to remain in place until October 29. It removes a tax of 33.3 cents a gallon on petrol and 37.3 cents on diesel, although drivers may have to wait for new fuel deliveries before the saving becomes visible at every station. Letters to the editor have linked Donald Trump’s policies and the actions of his administration to rising economic pressure on Australian mortgage holders, renters and borrowers. Andrew Trembath, of Blackburn, argued that the Trump administration’s second term had harmed countries around the world and made managing Australia’s economy more difficult for the Reserve Bank and the federal government. He pointed to the closure of USAID, the US withdrawal from the World Health Organisation and a lack of support for Ukraine. He also blamed the administration’s conflict with Iran for the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the resulting rise…
Malaysia has begun returning nearly 1,500 Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, despite warnings from the United Nations and rights groups that the country remains unsafe for their return. Dozens of buses travelled under police escort to a stadium near the Lumut naval base in north-western Malaysia on Tuesday. The passengers were expected to undergo processing before being taken to the base and transported to Myanmar by ship. Journalists were barred from entering the stadium. Malaysia’s Home Ministry said two Myanmar naval warships and a hospital ship would be used in the operation. The Malaysian authorities have described the returns as voluntary.…
Galatasaray are preparing an ambitious approach for Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk as they seek to strengthen a defence that has struggled for consistency at the start of the season. The Turkish champions are expected to prioritise a central defender when the January transfer window opens, following a 4-0 defeat by Trabzonspor earlier this month. Galatasaray interest in Virgil van Dijk could lead to summer move Turkish reports claim Galatasaray have revived their long-standing interest in Van Dijk, who has reportedly been on their transfer agenda for around two years. The club would like to explore the possibility of a…
The Reserve Bank of Australia has raised interest rates to a 15-year high despite weak economic conditions, warning that further increases may be necessary if inflation remains above target. The latest move is the fourth increase in eight months, taking the central bank’s benchmark cash rate higher as unemployment approaches a five-year high, house prices fall and economic growth per person remains weak. Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock said the decision would be difficult for households with mortgages and businesses carrying loans, but argued that persistently high inflation would cause greater harm, particularly to vulnerable Australians. “I know this decision…
Andy Burnham is to announce plans for a publicly owned Great British Grid, marking the first return of state ownership to the electricity networks since their privatisation under Margaret Thatcher 36 years ago. The new body will be tasked with increasing competition, speeding up connections for businesses and major projects, and helping expand renewable energy across the UK. Mr Burnham is expected to set out the proposal in his keynote speech at Labour’s conference in Liverpool on Tuesday. His address is also expected to include plans for greater state control of water and housing. Great British Grid is expected to…
Restaurateur Danny Meyer has used his new book to set out how he built a leadership structure around developing employees, including the claim that 80% of his general managers began as hourly workers. Meyer, founder and executive chairman of Union Square Hospitality Group, said 80% of the company’s hourly employees were in their first job when they joined. He argues that engaging and promoting staff is central to the group’s success. His book, What Could Possibly Go Right?, goes on sale today, two decades after his first book, Setting the Table, introduced the concept of “enlightened hospitality”. That approach placed…
Mauricio Pochettino has said the Premier League would have “lived through a period of deception” if Manchester City are found to have breached financial rules. An independent tribunal is understood to have reached decisions in the case involving 115 charges brought by the league against the club. The process is now moving towards an appeal, meaning the outcome remains subject to further proceedings. Pochettino, who managed Tottenham and Chelsea after previously taking charge of Southampton, said any breaches would have distorted the history of the competition and damaged sporting fairness. “At the end of the day, we went through something…
