A suspected gas leak has led to an evacuation at Brisbane’s Wesley Hospital, with emergency crews managing the incident at the Auchenflower facility. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said seven vehicles were sent to the hospital after the incident was reported at about 8.15am on Tuesday. Specialist scientific crews were also attending as the evacuation continued. It was not immediately known what type of gas was involved, how many people had been evacuated or whether anyone had been injured.
Hungary’s Parliament has lifted Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s immunity, along with that of two former ministers from Viktor Orban’s government, clearing the way for separate criminal investigations. The vote was overwhelmingly in favour, after Magyar asked lawmakers to remove his immunity so he could answer allegations he described as “character assassination”. Orban’s Fidesz party and its KDNP ally boycotted the session. Prosecutors are investigating Magyar over an incident at a Budapest nightclub in June 2024. They allege he took a mobile phone from a man who was filming him and threw it into the Danube River. Magyar has called the…
Wladimir Klitschko has filed an urgent petition in a Los Angeles court seeking temporary guardianship of his 11-year-old daughter Kaya’s estate, following the death of her mother, actress Hayden Panettiere. The former professional boxer is seeking authority to receive, manage and hold Kaya’s assets on her behalf. The legal action is intended to protect the girl’s inheritance, as she is described in the petition as the sole beneficiary of Panettiere’s estate. Panettiere, known for Heroes and Nashville, died aged 36 on August 16 after being found unresponsive at a residence in South Carolina. Her death was ruled accidental and attributed…

A payphone in Narooma, on the New South Wales far south coast, has been heritage listed for its role in connecting people during the Black Summer bushfires, when mobile coverage and power were cut off. The phone outside Narooma Plaza on the Princes Highway handled almost 1,000 calls over two months during and after the disaster. It has now been marked with a bronze National Trust of Australia NSW plaque decorated with gum leaves. Historian Naomi Parry Duncan, who led the nomination, was holidaying in Narooma on New Year’s Day in 2020 when fires threatened the town. She and others…
Brisbane’s Wesley Hospital has been evacuated after a gas leak prompted an emergency response at the facility in Auchenflower. The incident occurred at about 9am on Tuesday at the hospital on Coronation Drive. Two floors were cleared, with at least five fire crews attending and further crews expected to arrive. Queensland Police said they were aware of possible chemical exposure inside the healthcare facility. Paramedics treated some patients, who were understood to be in a stable condition. Patients were also assessed as they left the building. The total number evacuated and the cause of the leak have not yet been…
Renée Zellweger has been dismissed from a $10 million lawsuit brought by a woman who alleges she was injured at a rental property connected to the actress’s boyfriend, Ant Anstead. Court documents show that Tracey Belland dropped the Oscar-winning actress as a defendant. The claim against Zellweger was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it cannot be filed again. Belland’s lawsuit concerns an alleged incident in 2024 at a home Anstead was renting in Laguna Beach, California. She claims she stumbled and injured her knee after stepping on a thin rug covering a hole. Zellweger was not on the lease and had…
A toddler brought a loaded firearm into a daycare centre in Canton, Michigan, prompting an investigation and the arrest of one parent. The weapon was found inside the child’s backpack and was still in its holster, police said. Officers from the Canton Police Department were called to Children’s World Early Learning Center on Monday morning after staff discovered the firearm. The gun was secured without anyone being injured. Investigators have obtained video showing the toddler taking the weapon from the backpack while inside the centre. It remains unclear how the child gained access to it. Parent arrested as investigation continues…
Michael Burry, the investor who predicted the US housing crash, has warned that technology companies are building up more than US$3 trillion in hidden AI-related obligations that could destabilise the global economy if the boom fails to deliver. In an essay, Burry examined regulatory filings from Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta and Oracle, arguing that the companies’ spending on data centres and related infrastructure has created a huge financial exposure concealed by accounting rules. The five companies have signed leases worth US$1.2 trillion for future data centres, he said, including at least US$857 billion in non-cancellable commitments. They have also made…
A Utah judge has ordered the release on bail of a 71-year-old man who spent 41 years on death row for murder, after newly analysed DNA evidence failed to match him. Douglas Stewart Carter was sentenced to death in 1985 after being convicted of killing Eva Olesen, the aunt of Provo’s police chief at the time. He has always maintained his innocence and said a confession used against him was coerced. Judge Derek Pullan said the DNA results further weakened the case, although he ruled that a reasonable jury could still find Carter guilty of murdering Mrs Olesen. Carter must…
