Disney+ has begun losing Google Cast support in Germany and the Netherlands after a patent dispute with technology company InterDigital led to injunctions against the streaming service.
The restriction prevents subscribers in the affected countries from sending Disney+ programmes to Chromecast and other Google Cast-enabled devices. Some users are seeing a warning stating: “Streaming via Chromecast is not available in your country of origin.”
The move follows a series of legal setbacks for Disney in its dispute with InterDigital. The streaming platform has previously lost access to features including 4K HDR playback in Dolby Vision and 3D content in certain markets, although those restrictions have changed over time.
Reports by BroadcastNow and German technology publication T3N indicate that the latest injunctions apply in Germany and the Netherlands. Disney is able to appeal the decisions, and the Cast functionality could be restored if the legal position changes.
For now, affected subscribers can continue watching Disney+ through supported television apps and other devices, but cannot use Google Cast to transfer playback from the mobile or web app to a compatible screen.
