Human remains found in a field near Martin, Georgia, have prompted a joint investigation involving the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Deputies were called to the scene on Wednesday, August 26, after receiving a report that remains had been discovered in the area. Patrol officers and investigators secured the field while an initial examination was carried out.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation joins probe
The sheriff’s office requested assistance from the GBI because of the condition of the remains and the complexity of the investigation.
The remains are now being held by the Franklin County Coroner and the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office, which are working to establish the identity of the deceased.
Officials have not released any details about who was found. They said no further information would be made public until a positive identification had been made and relatives had been notified.
Franklin County Sheriff Scott Andrews said there was currently no evidence of foul play or any threat to the wider public. The investigation remains active.
Mr Andrews also urged the public to respect the privacy of the family once the identification process is complete.
