Aubrie Peterson has been recognised as FOX6’s High School Hot Shot after helping Sussex Hamilton secure the first state softball title in the programme’s history.
The Chargers defeated Muskego 8-3 in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 final at Goodman Diamond in Madison on 13 June.
Peterson, who plays catcher, delivered three hits and drove in six runs. Her performance included a two-run double during Hamilton’s four-run third inning and a bases-clearing double in the sixth.
The WIAA said Peterson’s six RBIs were the second-highest total recorded in the history of the state tournament. Hamilton finished the season with a 30-1 record.
The victory ended a long wait for the Sussex school, which had reached the state tournament 13 times without winning the softball championship. The Chargers had also appeared at the tournament in five of the previous six seasons.
Hamilton pitcher Bitsy Palicka struck out six batters over seven innings and allowed six hits as the Chargers completed their run to the title.
Peterson had competed in several sports during middle school before concentrating on softball in high school. Her contribution to Hamilton’s landmark triumph earned her the weekly FOX6 High School Hot Shot honour.
