Firefighters found the victim, described as a resident, after extinguishing a bedroom blaze at the Owendale complex in South Davis; a dog was taken for veterinary treatment and the cause is under investigation.
One person has died following a fire at an apartment complex in Davis, California, on Saturday morning, according to the Davis Fire Department, which said the cause is being investigated jointly with the Davis Police Department.
Crews were called to the Owendale apartments — identified by the Sacramento Bee as the Owendale Mutual Housing Community — on the 3000 block of Albany Avenue in South Davis shortly after 8.10am, after a passerby alerted authorities. Firefighters arriving at the scene found a fire burning in a bedroom. Battalion Chief Matt Galloway told the Sacramento Bee the blaze was brought under control “within minutes” and contained to the bedroom itself.
A search of the apartment found one person dead inside. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, though the Sacramento Bee described the person as a resident of the apartment. Galloway told the newspaper that a 24-hour caretaker regularly visits the residence but was not there when the fire broke out. No one else was believed to have been in the home at the time.
A dog was also found in the apartment and taken to a local veterinary hospital for treatment.
The fire did not spread to any neighbouring structures, and no firefighters were injured, the department said. As of Saturday, no published reports had identified the victim, established what caused the fire or given an update on the dog’s condition, with the investigation described as ongoing.
