The former Manchester United boss, unveiled by AC Milan on Wednesday, used his first public comments since being sacked to apologise to supporters and acknowledge errors made during his time in the role.
Ruben Amorim has apologised to Manchester United supporters and conceded he got things wrong during his time as head coach, in his first public remarks since he was dismissed six months ago. The 41-year-old addressed his Manchester United exit as he was officially unveiled as AC Milan’s new head coach on Wednesday.
According to the Daily Mail, Amorim told a half-hour press conference, conducted in English, that it was difficult to detail his mistakes without setting out the full context of his time at the club. He added that he regretted not having had the opportunity to address United supporters since leaving, while remaining proud to have spent 14 months in the role.
Reflecting on where things had gone wrong, Amorim was reluctant to go into detail. “There are a lot of things I could do better in the last experience,” he said, insisting he had learned a great deal and would try to improve, even if some aspects of his approach were unlikely to change.
His time at United had been shadowed by criticism of his reluctance to adapt his tactics; he had previously said that not even the Pope would be able to change his mind about his preferred system. That inflexibility contributed to a dispute with the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, before his sacking in January.
Michael Carrick took the reins in mid-January and oversaw a marked improvement in form, with United finishing third in the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League.
Amorim and Carrick are due to meet as opposing head coaches when Manchester United face AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, on 15 August — United’s final match of pre-season
