A man has been shot and killed by police in San Fernando, California, after officers responded to a report that he was attacking a woman with a shovel.
The incident happened at about 11.45pm on Monday, August 31, near the junction of Maclay Avenue and Third Street, according to San Fernando interim police chief Anthony Miranda.
Police said the original emergency call described an assault involving a deadly weapon. When officers arrived, they encountered the man holding a shovel before opening fire.
Officers performed CPR after the shooting, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released while authorities notify his family.
The woman named in the initial report was taken to the San Fernando police station for questioning, alongside two other people described by police as victims. It was not immediately clear whether she had been injured.
Authorities have not disclosed what happened during the confrontation or what led officers to use their weapons.
The California Department of Justice is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, including the identities and conditions of those involved, have not been released.
