A threatened teachers’ strike in Seattle has been averted after Seattle Public Schools and the Seattle Education Association reached a tentative contract agreement just hours before the new school year was due to begin.

The agreement was reached before a midnight deadline that could otherwise have triggered a walkout on the first day of term. Under the proposed three-year contract, staff would receive guaranteed salary increases of 2.6 per cent in 2026-27, 3.6 per cent in 2027-28 and 2.6 per cent in 2028-29 — nearly 9 per cent in total. Eligible employees would also receive annual step increases averaging about 4 per cent.
The package includes district contributions to VEBA healthcare accounts from the 2027-28 school year, six additional school psychologist posts and funding for a full-time counsellor or social worker at elementary schools with more than 350 pupils.
It also sets out new rules governing the use of artificial intelligence, provides support for educational interpreters seeking to meet state certification requirements, and expands technology access for paraprofessionals. Displaced staff would receive wider “right to return” provisions.
The negotiations had prompted uncertainty for families across Seattle, with the city preparing emergency childcare arrangements in case schools could not open. Mayor Katie Wilson had directed Seattle Parks and Recreation to make four community centres available for free, staffed activities for children if a strike went ahead.
