The Indiana State Police officer is in a stable condition after being hit several times following a pursuit near Michigan City, with the suspect later found dead in nearby woodland.
An Indiana State Police trooper is recovering in hospital after being shot multiple times at the end of a vehicle pursuit near Michigan City on Friday morning, with the suspect later discovered dead in a wooded area a few miles away, according to Indiana State Police.
The trooper was taken to a hospital in South Bend, where police said his condition was stabilised. Indiana State Police added that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The pursuit began at around 7.30am, when the trooper was chasing a suspect driving a silver Ford along Interstate 94. Police said the chase came to an end when both vehicles crashed near a Speedway petrol station after leaving the interstate onto US 421. The suspect then opened fire, striking the trooper several times, before driving off in the Ford as the officer shot back.
Shortly after 9.15am, officers located the vehicle in woodland near Wozniak and Joliet roads, roughly five miles south of the crash site, with assistance from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department aviation unit. A tactical team then searched the area, and police later confirmed the suspect had been found dead. No further information about the suspect has been released.
