Helene’s storm surge sent about 4.5ft of water into the museum, damaging display cases, shelving, maps, books and other items. Jerry Sarubbe, the museum board’s vice-president, said roughly 70 per cent of the collection had been salvaged. The surviving material…

Britain and other developed countries are facing record-low birth rates as fewer people have children, have them later or decide not to become parents, according to observations highlighted by crossbench peer Camilla Cavendish in her new book, Generation Maybe. The UK’s overall fertility rate has fallen to 1.39 children per woman, while the figure given for white Anglo-Saxon British women is 1.1. The replacement rate needed to keep a population stable is 2.1 children per woman. The decline is not confined to Britain. Cavendish argues that a trend which began in the West has spread across the world, with China,…

Victoria’s opposition coalition has pledged to abolish emergency management days, which allow prisoners to receive sentence reductions for good behaviour during unforeseen events such as industrial disputes and lockdowns. The measures, which are unique in Australia, would be scrapped if the coalition defeats the Labor government at the state election in November. Freedom of Information documents provided to the coalition show that nearly 2,300 years were removed from prisoners’ sentences over a four-year period under the scheme. The reductions applied to offenders including killers, rapists and paedophiles during the Covid-19 pandemic. Prisoners were automatically granted four days off their sentences…

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a Boeing 737 Max software glitch that could remove access to part of the aircraft’s automated flight guidance during an aborted landing. The issue can arise in a rare missed-approach scenario when a pilot is using the autopilot on a precision approach and alters the pre-programmed flight plan. It affects versions 14 and 14.1 of the flight management computer operating system. Under those circumstances, the aircraft’s vertical navigation system, known as VNAV, may disengage. VNAV is designed to maintain the planned altitude at different waypoints along a flight path. The autopilot would continue to…
