Australia’s Immigration Minister Tony Burke has rejected claims that the country is experiencing mass immigration, as he unveiled changes intended to reduce migration demand and curb the repeated switching of visas. Speaking at the National Press Club, Mr Burke described it as “absurd” to suggest Australia was a mass immigration country. The response has focused on whether the minister’s characterisation is consistent with population growth, migration figures and pressure on housing and infrastructure. Australia’s population passed 28 million in June this year, according to figures cited in the criticism of Mr Burke’s position. That is 1.6 million higher than the…
The lone holdout juror in the Lindsay Clancy trial has hired lawyer Edward Andrew Paltzik, who also represents three people connected with the death of Nolan Wells. The juror’s identity has been sealed by the court following intense public criticism after the trial ended in a mistrial. Paltzik said he was now representing the man and pledged to help protect him. In a statement, the lawyer described his client as “courageous and heroic” and “a champion of justice”. He said the juror was safe at an undisclosed secure location in rural northern New England. Paltzik said his immediate focus was…

Donald Trump is weighing a “big decision” on Iran as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it struck a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. The development comes alongside a report alleging there are “reasonable grounds” to believe the United States was behind a deadly strike on a school in Minab in February. The claim about the school attack remains an allegation, while the IRGC’s statement about the tanker and Mr Trump’s deliberations were reported as part of continuing live updates on the Iran conflict.
The Hollywood Vampires lawsuit brought by concert promoter Sten Hard has been dismissed after a court ruled that the band had insufficient connections to Texas for the case to be heard there. Hard had sought around $277,000 from Hollywood Vampires Touring, claiming the group pulled out of a scheduled 2023 performance on the day of the concert. The promoter alleged that the band said the venue was inadequate. He had previously withdrawn the claims against Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper and Joe Perry as individuals. The case continued against the band’s corporate entity, but the judge ruled that it could not…

Scientists have identified a lunar impact crater more than twice the width of the Roman Colosseum, created by an asteroid or comet fragment that struck the Moon in 2024 without being detected at the time. The steep-sided crater measures about 222 metres across and reaches up to 43 metres deep, making it the largest known impact crater formed in recent times anywhere in the Solar System. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted the feature on the Moon’s near side in May 2024, shortly after the impact occurred. However, the discovery was not recognised in the spacecraft’s wide-angle imagery until August 2025,…
